The displacement and velocity equations
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on The displacement and velocity equations.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is the angular frequency related to the period and to the frequency?
Give the maximum speed of a simple harmonic oscillator and state where in the motion it occurs.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Write the equation for the displacement of a body in simple harmonic motion, defining every symbol with its unit.
Model answer
x = A cos(ωt + ε), where x is the displacement in m, A the amplitude in m, ω the angular frequency in rad s⁻¹, t the time in s and ε the phase constant in rad.
- 2
Write the equation for the velocity of a body in simple harmonic motion.
Model answer
v = −ωA sin(ωt + ε), where v is the velocity in m s⁻¹ and the other symbols have the meanings they have in the displacement equation.
- 3
How is the angular frequency related to the period and to the frequency?
Model answer
ω = 2π/T and equivalently ω = 2πf, where T is the period in s and f the frequency in Hz.
- 4
What does the phase constant ε tell you about an oscillation?
Model answer
It fixes the phase of the oscillation at the instant t = 0, and so tells you where in its cycle the body was when timing began.
- 5
A body is released from its maximum displacement at the instant timing begins. State the value of the phase constant.
Model answer
The phase constant is zero, because cos 0 is one and the displacement equation then gives x = A at t = 0.
- 6
Give the maximum speed of a simple harmonic oscillator and state where in the motion it occurs.
Model answer
The maximum speed is ωA, and it occurs as the body passes through the equilibrium position where the displacement is zero.
