Key term

Explain why the standard period equation fails for a pendulum swinging through a large angle.

Key term

Under what condition does a simple pendulum perform simple harmonic motion?

Key term

The length of a simple pendulum is increased by a factor of four. What happens to its period?

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

What is meant by a simple pendulum?

    Model answer

A simple pendulum is a small dense bob treated as a point mass, hung from a light inextensible string and free to swing in a vertical plane.

  2. 2

State the equation for the period of a simple pendulum, defining each symbol with its unit.

    Model answer

T = 2π√(l/g), where T is the period in s, l the length of the pendulum in m and g the acceleration of free fall in m s⁻².

  3. 3

Between which two points is the length l of a simple pendulum measured?

    Model answer

It is measured from the point of suspension to the centre of mass of the bob.

  4. 4

Explain why the period of a simple pendulum does not depend on the mass of the bob.

    Model answer

The restoring force is the component of the bob's weight along the arc, which is proportional to its mass, and the inertia resisting that force is also proportional to its mass. The mass therefore cancels from the equation of motion.

  5. 5

Under what condition does a simple pendulum perform simple harmonic motion?

    Model answer

The amplitude must be small, so that the angle of swing in radians is very nearly equal to its sine. Only then is the restoring force proportional to the displacement.

  6. 6

    Calculate the period of a simple pendulum of length 0.80 m where g is 9.81 m s⁻².

    Model answer

    T = 2π√(0.80 ÷ 9.81) = 2π × 0.2856 = 1.79 s. Substituting back, l = gT²/(4π²) = 9.81 × 3.219 ÷ 39.48 = 0.80 m.
