Using Radiation to Investigate Stars
Multiwavelength astronomy
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on Multiwavelength astronomy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does an infrared observation reveal that a visible one cannot?
What does a radio observation reveal?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why does observing at different wavelengths reveal different processes?
Model answer
Each process emits at a characteristic photon energy, so a wavelength band reveals the processes energetic enough to produce it and hides the others.
- 2
What kind of object or process does an X-ray observation reveal?
Model answer
Very hot and energetic material, such as gas falling onto a neutron star or black hole, or the million-kelvin gas in a galaxy cluster.
- 3
What does an infrared observation reveal that a visible one cannot?
Model answer
Cool material such as dust clouds and forming stars, and it also sees through dust that blocks visible light.
- 4
Why is infrared able to penetrate a dust cloud that stops visible light?
Model answer
Its longer wavelength is scattered far less by dust grains comparable in size with the wavelength of visible light.
- 5
What does a radio observation reveal?
Model answer
Cold hydrogen gas and the synchrotron radiation from fast electrons spiralling in magnetic fields, such as in the jets of active galaxies.
- 6
What do gamma-ray observations reveal?
Model answer
The most energetic events of all, such as gamma-ray bursts, supernova remnants and matter–antimatter annihilation.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Using Radiation to Investigate Stars, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
