Line spectra and energy levels
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Line spectra and energy levels.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is a line absorption spectrum produced?
How does a line emission spectrum appear when viewed with a diffraction grating?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is a line emission spectrum produced?
Model answer
Atoms are excited, and as their electrons fall back to lower energy levels each emits a photon of a definite energy, giving light at discrete wavelengths.
- 2
How is a line absorption spectrum produced?
Model answer
White light passes through a cool gas, whose atoms absorb the photons whose energies exactly match the differences between their energy levels, leaving dark lines.
- 3
How does a line emission spectrum appear when viewed with a diffraction grating?
Model answer
As a series of sharp bright lines at particular angles against a dark background.
- 4
How does a line absorption spectrum appear when viewed with a diffraction grating?
Model answer
As a continuous coloured spectrum crossed by dark lines where wavelengths have been removed.
- 5
Why does each element produce a unique line spectrum?
Model answer
Each element has its own set of energy levels, so the possible differences between them, and hence the photon energies, are unique to it.
- 6
State the equation relating photon energy to a transition between two energy levels.
Model answer
hf = E₂ − E₁, the difference between the two energy levels.

Every question in Photons, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
