Conductance, conductivity and comparing materials
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Conductance, conductivity and comparing materials.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is copper used for connecting leads but nichrome for the element of an electric fire?
Calculate the conductance of a 250 Ω resistor.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define electrical conductance and state its unit.
Model answer
Conductance is the reciprocal of resistance, G = 1/R, and it is measured in siemens (S).
- 2
Calculate the conductance of a 250 Ω resistor.
Model answer
The conductance is 1 ÷ 250 = 4.0 × 10⁻³ S.
- 3
Define conductivity and state its unit.
Model answer
Conductivity is the reciprocal of resistivity, σ = 1/ρ, and it is measured in siemens per metre, S m⁻¹.
- 4
A metal has a resistivity of 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ Ω m. Calculate its conductivity.
Model answer
The conductivity is 1 ÷ 1.7 × 10⁻⁸ = 5.9 × 10⁷ S m⁻¹.
- 5
How do the conductances of components connected in parallel combine?
Model answer
They simply add, so the total conductance is G = G₁ + G₂ + … for the parallel combination.
- 6
Why is conductance a more convenient quantity than resistance for a parallel combination?
Model answer
The rule for resistors in parallel adds the reciprocals of the resistances, and conductance is exactly that reciprocal, so the rule becomes a simple sum.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Resistance, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
