Conduction of Electricity
Conductors, insulators and other charge carriers
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 2
Overview
Recall questions on Conductors, insulators and other charge carriers.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
In an electrolyte, in which directions do the positive and the negative ions drift?
Name the charge carriers present in an ionised gas.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What must a material contain if it is to conduct electricity?
Model answer
It must contain charged particles that are free to move through the whole of the material.
- 2
Define an electrical conductor.
Model answer
A conductor is a material containing mobile charge carriers, so that charge flows through it when a potential difference is applied across it.
- 3
Why is a metal such as copper a good conductor?
Model answer
Each atom releases one or more of its outer electrons into a shared sea of delocalised electrons, giving a number density of free carriers of the order of 10²⁹ m⁻³.
- 4
Why is polythene an electrical insulator?
Model answer
All of its electrons are bound into covalent bonds within the molecules, so there are essentially no charge carriers free to move through the material.
- 5
Name the charge carriers in an aqueous solution of copper(II) sulfate.
Model answer
The carriers are the positive Cu²⁺ ions and the negative SO₄²⁻ ions in the solution.
- 6
In an electrolyte, in which directions do the positive and the negative ions drift?
Model answer
Positive ions drift towards the negative electrode and negative ions drift towards the positive electrode.
Other ways to work this
The same content, four other ways.
What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Conduction of Electricity, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
