Electric potential and the work done on a charge
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 4 Section A
Overview
Recall questions on Electric potential and the work done on a charge.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Is electric potential a scalar or a vector quantity?
What is the electric potential at an infinite distance from a charge?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the electric potential at a point.
Model answer
Electric potential at a point is the work done per unit positive charge in bringing a small test charge from infinity to that point.
- 2
Give the equation for the electric potential due to a point charge and define every symbol.
Model answer
Vₑ = Q/(4πε₀r), where Vₑ is the potential in volts, Q the charge in coulombs, ε₀ the permittivity of free space and r the distance from the charge in metres.
- 3
State the unit of electric potential.
Model answer
The volt. That is one joule per coulomb.
- 4
Is electric potential a scalar or a vector quantity?
Model answer
A scalar, so potentials from several charges are added as ordinary numbers with their signs.
- 5
What is the electric potential at an infinite distance from a charge?
Model answer
Zero, since that is the reference point from which the work is measured.
- 6
Why can the electric potential near a charge be negative?
Model answer
A negative charge attracts a positive test charge, so work is released rather than done in bringing it from infinity.
