Circular Motion
Horizontal circular motion in practice
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Horizontal circular motion in practice.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
An 1100 kg car rounds a bend of radius 45 m at 18 m s⁻¹. Calculate the frictional force needed.
Why is a bend more dangerous when the road surface is wet?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
A car turns a corner on a level road. Name the force acting as the centripetal force and state its direction.
Model answer
Friction between the tyres and the road surface acts as the centripetal force, and it points horizontally towards the centre of the bend.
- 2
An 1100 kg car rounds a bend of radius 45 m at 18 m s⁻¹. Calculate the frictional force needed.
Model answer
The force required is 1100 × 18² ÷ 45 = 7.92 × 10³ N directed towards the centre of the bend.
- 3
The greatest friction available to a car on a bend of radius 45 m is 0.70 times its weight. Calculate the maximum cornering speed, taking g as 9.81 m s⁻².
Model answer
Setting 0.70mg equal to mv²/r gives v = √(0.70 × 9.81 × 45) = 17.6 m s⁻¹.
- 4
Why does the maximum speed at which a car can round a flat bend not depend on the mass of the car?
Model answer
Both the centripetal force required and the maximum friction available are proportional to the mass, so the mass cancels from the two sides of the equation.
- 5
Why is a bend more dangerous when the road surface is wet?
Model answer
The maximum friction force the tyres can provide is reduced, so the largest centripetal force available is smaller and the bend can only be taken safely at a lower speed.
- 6
What is a conical pendulum?
Model answer
It is a mass on a string swung so that the mass travels in a horizontal circle at constant speed while the string sweeps out the surface of a cone.
