Measuring specific heat capacity
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Measuring specific heat capacity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the electrical method for finding the specific heat capacity of a metal block.
Define the specific heat capacity of a substance.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define the specific heat capacity of a substance.
Model answer
The specific heat capacity is the energy needed to raise the temperature of one kilogram of the substance by one kelvin.
- 2
State the unit of specific heat capacity.
Model answer
Specific heat capacity is measured in J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹.
- 3
State the defining equation for specific heat capacity, with every symbol and unit.
Model answer
Q = mcΔθ, where Q is the heat supplied in J, m the mass in kg, c the specific heat capacity in J kg⁻¹ K⁻¹ and Δθ the temperature rise in K. Rearranged, c = Q/(mΔθ).
- 4
Describe the electrical method for finding the specific heat capacity of a metal block.
Model answer
A block of known mass has an immersion heater and a thermometer in holes drilled into it. The heater is run at a measured potential difference and current for a measured time, and the temperature rise is recorded, so c is found from VIt = mcΔθ.
- 5
Why is a drop of oil put into the thermometer hole in a metal block?
Model answer
The oil fills the air gap and improves thermal contact between the block and the thermometer bulb, so the thermometer reads the temperature of the block rather than trapped air.
- 6
Why is the block lagged during the experiment?
Model answer
Lagging reduces the heat lost from the block to the surroundings, so more of the energy supplied by the heater goes into raising the temperature of the block itself.
