What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How is magnetic flux density defined and measured?
What does each symbol represent in the equation F = BIL?
State the equation for the force on a charged particle moving in a magnetic field, defining every symbol with its unit.
State the equation for the magnetic flux density near a long straight current-carrying wire, defining every symbol with its unit.
State the equation for the magnetic flux density inside a long solenoid, defining every symbol with its unit.
Why is soft iron rather than steel used for the core of an electromagnet?
State the equation for the force per unit length between two long parallel current-carrying wires, defining every symbol with its unit.
Show how the force per unit length between two parallel wires follows from B = μ₀I/(2πa) and F = BIl.
How does the path of a charged particle in a uniform magnetic field differ from its path in a uniform electric field?
Why do the drift tubes of a linear accelerator get longer along the machine?
What is a magnetic field?
What does the density of magnetic field lines represent?
How is the direction of the force on a positive charge moving through a magnetic field found?
What determines the final steady value that the Hall voltage settles at?
Write the condition for equilibrium in the Hall slice in terms of the electric field and the magnetic flux density.
Describe the magnetic field pattern around a straight current-carrying conductor.
How does the direction of the force differ for a negative charge moving the same way as a positive one?
Why is the Hall voltage proportional to the magnetic flux density when the current is held constant?
Two long parallel wires carry currents in the same direction. State the direction of the force on each wire.
Why does a velocity selector pick out one speed regardless of the mass or the charge of the particles?
Take Magnetic Fields further
The same content, four other ways.
Commonly confused
Pairs that lose marks when they are blurred together.
Density vs The moment of a force
Density: the mass per unit volume of a substance. The moment of a force: the force multiplied by the perpendicular distance from the pivot.
Magnetic flux density vs Magnetic flux
Magnetic flux density: the force per unit current per unit length on a conductor across the field. Magnetic flux: the product of that quantity and the area it passes through.
Questions from this topic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a magnetic field?
Model answer
A region of space where a force is exerted on a moving charged particle or on a magnetic pole.
- 2
What do magnetic field lines indicate about the force in the field?
Model answer
They indicate the direction of the force that would act on a north pole placed in the field.
- 3
Describe the path that magnetic field lines take around a bar magnet.
Model answer
They form closed loops, emerging from the north pole and entering the south pole outside the magnet.
- 4
What does the density of magnetic field lines represent?
Model answer
The strength of the magnetic field; closer lines indicate a stronger field.
- 5
How is a uniform magnetic field represented using field lines?
Model answer
By parallel, equally spaced field lines.
- 6
Describe the magnetic field pattern around a straight current-carrying conductor.
Model answer
The field consists of concentric circles centred on the wire.

Magnetic Fields revision questions
- What does Magnetic Fields cover in WJEC A-Level Physics?
- 7 subtopics: magnetic fields and field patterns, magnetic flux density and the force on a conductor, the force on a moving charge and its circular path, the hall effect and the hall voltage, magnetic fields due to a current in a wire and in a solenoid, forces between current-carrying conductors and charged particle beams, velocity selectors and accelerators. Each one has its own page with questions and model answers.
- How is Magnetic Fields organised?
- By the WJEC 1420QS specification, subtopic by subtopic, so it matches the order you are taught it in.
Every question in Magnetic Fields, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
