Non-uniform acceleration and curved motion graphs
- 3 things to know
- AS Unit 1
Overview
Recall questions on Non-uniform acceleration and curved motion graphs.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why do all the sloping sections of a bouncing ball's velocity–time graph have the same gradient?
A car's curved velocity–time graph encloses an area of 240 m over an interval of 12 s. Calculate the mean velocity over that interval.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How can you tell from a velocity–time graph whether the acceleration of a body is uniform?
Model answer
A uniform acceleration gives a straight line of constant gradient, so any curvature in the graph means the acceleration is changing.
- 2
Why is the gradient of a chord joining two points on a curved velocity–time graph not the acceleration at either of those points?
Model answer
The chord gives the mean acceleration over the whole interval between the two points. The acceleration at a single point is the gradient of the tangent to the curve there, and on a curve that differs from the chord.
- 3
How is the displacement obtained from a velocity–time graph whose line is curved?
Model answer
It is the area between the curve and the time axis, found by counting squares or by dividing the region into narrow trapeziums and adding their areas.
- 4
What quantity is represented by the area under an acceleration–time graph?
Model answer
It represents the change in velocity over that interval.
- 5
What is represented by the part of a velocity–time graph that lies below the time axis?
Model answer
It represents motion in the negative direction, so that area counts as a negative displacement and must be subtracted from the positive area to give the net displacement.
- 6
Describe the shape of the displacement–time graph of a body starting from rest whose acceleration is steadily increasing.
Model answer
It starts with zero gradient and curves upwards ever more steeply. The gradient of the graph is the velocity, and that velocity is growing faster and faster.
