Graphs of displacement, velocity and acceleration
- 3 things to know
- A2 Unit 3
Overview
Recall questions on Graphs of displacement, velocity and acceleration.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain why the acceleration against displacement line must pass through the origin.
State the phase relationship between velocity and acceleration in simple harmonic motion.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the shape of a graph of acceleration against displacement for a body in simple harmonic motion.
Model answer
It is a straight line passing through the origin with a negative gradient, running from the second quadrant to the fourth.
- 2
What does the gradient of an acceleration against displacement graph represent?
Model answer
The gradient is −ω², so the angular frequency is the square root of the magnitude of the gradient.
- 3
A graph of acceleration against displacement for an oscillator has a gradient of −64 s⁻². Calculate the period.
Model answer
ω² = 64 s⁻² so ω = 8.0 rad s⁻¹, and T = 2π/ω = 0.785 s. Substituting back, ω = 2π ÷ 0.785 returns 8.0 rad s⁻¹.
- 4
Explain why the acceleration against displacement line must pass through the origin.
Model answer
At zero displacement the body is at the equilibrium position, where there is no resultant restoring force. With no resultant force there is no acceleration.
- 5
Describe the shape of the displacement against time graph for a body released from its maximum displacement at t = 0.
Model answer
It is a cosine curve that starts at the positive amplitude, falls through zero after a quarter of a period, reaches the negative amplitude at the half period and returns.
- 6
State the phase relationship between displacement and acceleration in simple harmonic motion.
Model answer
They are in antiphase, π rad apart. Whenever the displacement is positive the acceleration is negative, and both reach their extreme magnitudes at the same instants.
