Coastal Landscapes
Cliffs, wave-cut platforms, geos and blowholes
- 2 things to know
- Component 1 Section A
Overview
Formation of a cliff, formation of a wave-cut platform and typical gradient of a wave-cut platform.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does a cliff retreat parallel to itself?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the formation of a cliff.
Model answer
Waves cut a notch at the base of a rock face between the tide marks. The overhang collapses, and repeated notching and collapse produce a steepening cliff.
- 2
Why does a cliff retreat parallel to itself?
Model answer
Each cycle of notching and collapse removes a slice from the cliff foot. The face keeps its angle and moves landward rather than becoming lower.
- 3
What controls the angle of a cliff profile?
Model answer
Rock resistance, the dip of the strata and the rate of sub-aerial weathering set the angle. Strong, landward-dipping rock gives a near vertical face.
- 4
Explain the formation of a wave-cut platform.
Model answer
As the cliff retreats it leaves behind the base of the notch as a gently sloping rock bench. Abrasion by sediment dragged across the surface smooths and lowers the platform.
- 5
What is the typical gradient of a wave-cut platform?
Model answer
A wave-cut platform typically slopes seaward at less than 4°. The gentle angle keeps the platform within the intertidal zone.
- 6
Why does a wave-cut platform limit its own growth?
Model answer
A wide platform makes waves break further offshore and lose energy crossing it. Less energy reaches the cliff, so retreat slows and the platform stops widening.
