Concentration, ratios and development indices
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Formula for a location quotient, formula for the dependency ratio and one limitation of the dependency ratio.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What does a location quotient measure?
State the formula for a location quotient.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What does a location quotient measure?
Model answer
A location quotient measures how concentrated an activity is in one area compared with the national picture. The measure is a ratio of two shares.
- 2
State the formula for a location quotient.
Model answer
The local share of an activity is divided by the national share of that same activity. Each share is expressed as a proportion of its own total.
- 3
An industry employs 20% of a town's workforce and 10% of the national workforce. Calculate the location quotient.
Model answer
The calculation is 0.20 divided by 0.10, which gives 2.0. The industry is twice as concentrated locally as nationally.
- 4
How is a location quotient interpreted?
Model answer
A value of 1 means the local share matches the national share exactly. Above 1 indicates concentration and below 1 indicates under-representation.
- 5
State the formula for the dependency ratio.
Model answer
The number of people under 15 and over 64 is divided by the number aged 15 to 64. That quotient is then multiplied by 100.
- 6
A population is 30% under 15, 55% aged 15 to 64 and 15% over 64. Calculate the dependency ratio.
Model answer
The dependent groups total 45 and the working-age group is 55. The quotient of 45 over 55, multiplied by 100, gives 81.8.
