  1. 1

What is meant by a country's resource base?

    Model answer

A country's resource base is the stock of minerals, energy, soils and water available within it. The base sets a limit on what the economy can exploit without importing.

  2. 2

Name the mineral that dominates Botswana's exports and state when it was found.

    Model answer

Diamonds dominate Botswana's exports, and the Orapa deposit was discovered in 1967. Jwaneng, opened in 1982, is the world's richest diamond mine by value.

  3. 3

    What is Debswana?

    Model answer

Debswana is a fifty-fifty joint venture between the government of Botswana and De Beers. The partnership gives the state half the profit from every mine it operates.

  4. 4

Explain how diamond revenue transformed Botswana after 1966.

    Model answer

Botswana was among the world's poorest countries at independence, with almost no paved road. Diamond revenue funded schools, clinics and roads and carried the country to upper-middle income.

  5. 5

State the contribution diamonds make to Botswana's exports and public finances.

    Model answer

Diamonds supplied roughly 80% of Botswana's merchandise export earnings in 2022. The stone also provided around a third of government revenue.

  6. 6

Which minerals besides gold does Ghana export?

    Model answer

Ghana exports bauxite, manganese and diamonds alongside its gold. Cocoa and crude oil complete the main export list.
