Periglacial weathering, mass movement, water and wind
- 2 things to know
- Component 1 Section A
Overview
Nivation hollow, process of nivation in stages and scree slope and how one forms.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define a nivation hollow.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Why is frost weathering so effective in a periglacial climate?
Model answer
Temperatures cross 0 °C very frequently in spring and autumn. Each cycle refreezes water in the joints, so rock is shattered rapidly.
- 2
Define a nivation hollow.
Model answer
A nivation hollow is a shallow depression formed beneath a patch of long-lying snow. Frost shattering and meltwater removal deepen the hollow year by year.
- 3
Explain the process of nivation in stages.
Model answer
Snow gathers in a hollow and partly melts on warm days, then refreezes at night. Freeze-thaw shatters the rock beneath the snow patch and summer meltwater carries the debris away, so the hollow enlarges.
- 4
Why is a nivation hollow important in landscape development?
Model answer
The hollow can enlarge until it holds enough snow to form ice. A cirque glacier may then develop within it.
- 5
Define a blockfield.
Model answer
A blockfield, or felsenmeer, is a spread of large angular boulders covering a plateau surface. Frost shattering of the bedrock in place produced the boulders.
- 6
Where in the UK are blockfields found?
Model answer
Blockfields cover parts of the Glyderau in Snowdonia and the Cairngorm plateau. The gentle gradient means the shattered blocks have not moved far.
