Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define a biome.

    Model answer

A biome is a large-scale ecosystem defined by its climate and its characteristic vegetation. Tropical rainforest, savanna, hot desert and tundra are examples.

  2. 2

Describe the distribution of tropical rainforest.

    Model answer

Tropical rainforest lies in a broken belt within about 10° of the equator. The Amazon and Congo basins and the islands of South East Asia hold most of it.

  3. 3

Where are the world's hot deserts found, and why?

    Model answer

Hot deserts lie in belts around 20° to 30° north and south of the equator. Air descending in the subtropical high-pressure cells warms and dries, so very little rain falls.

  4. 4

Describe the distribution of savanna grassland.

    Model answer

Savanna forms a belt between the tropical rainforest and the hot deserts. Large areas cover East Africa, the Sahel, northern Australia and the Brazilian cerrado.

  5. 5

Where is temperate deciduous forest found?

    Model answer

Temperate deciduous forest occupies the mid-latitudes of western Europe, eastern North America and eastern Asia. Mild winters and rainfall throughout the year favour broadleaved trees.

  6. 6

Describe the distribution of boreal forest.

    Model answer

Boreal forest, or taiga, forms a continuous belt across northern Canada, Scandinavia and Russia between about 50° and 70° north. The southern hemisphere has no equivalent belt, because it lacks land at those latitudes.
