Glaciated Landscapes
Glacial landscape suites and change over time
- 2 things to know
- Component 1 Section A
Overview
Suite of landforms typical of a highland glaciated landscape, suite of landforms typical of a lowland glaciated landscape and knock and lochan topography.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe the suite of landforms typical of a lowland glaciated landscape.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Describe the suite of landforms typical of a highland glaciated landscape.
Model answer
Highland areas carry cirques, arêtes, pyramidal peaks, glacial troughs, hanging valleys and truncated spurs. Ribbon lakes occupy the over-deepened trough floors.
- 2
Describe the suite of landforms typical of a lowland glaciated landscape.
Model answer
Lowlands carry till plains, drumlin swarms, terminal and recessional moraines and erratics. Fluvioglacial eskers, kames and outwash plains lie among them.
- 3
Why is erosion dominant in the highlands and deposition in the lowlands?
Model answer
Steep gradients confine and accelerate mountain ice, so erosion dominates there. Ice spreading onto a lowland slows and thickens with debris, so material is released.
- 4
Contrast the landscape left by an ice sheet with that left by a valley glacier.
Model answer
An ice sheet scours a wide area evenly and leaves ice-moulded knock and lochan terrain or till plains. A valley glacier is confined and cuts a single deep trough with cirques above it.
- 5
What is knock and lochan topography?
Model answer
Knock and lochan is a landscape of ice-scoured rock knolls separated by small lake-filled hollows. North-west Scotland around Assynt is the classic British example.
- 6
Why do valley glaciers produce sharper relief than ice sheets?
Model answer
Confined ice concentrates erosion into a narrow trough while the peaks above stay exposed to frost shattering. An ice sheet buries the whole landscape and smooths it instead.
