Relief, dam sites and hydroelectric power
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Head in hydroelectric generation, world's largest hydroelectric power station and state its capacity and grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does geology matter as much as relief at a dam site?
Define head in hydroelectric generation.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What relief conditions favour a hydroelectric dam?
Model answer
A deep, narrow valley lets a short dam wall impound a large volume of water. A wide basin upstream provides the reservoir capacity behind it.
- 2
Why does geology matter as much as relief at a dam site?
Model answer
The valley floor and sides must be impermeable so that water is not lost through the rock. Stable foundations are needed to carry the weight of the dam and reservoir.
- 3
Define head in hydroelectric generation.
Model answer
Head is the vertical drop from the reservoir surface down to the turbine. A greater head gives each cubic metre of water more potential energy.
- 4
How do head and discharge together determine output?
Model answer
Power output rises with both the height of the drop and the volume flowing each second. A low-head scheme therefore needs a very large discharge to match a high-head one.
- 5
Name the world's largest hydroelectric power station and state its capacity.
Model answer
The Three Gorges Dam on the Yangtze in China has an installed capacity of 22,500 MW. The scheme was completed in 2012.
- 6
Give two other very large hydroelectric schemes.
Model answer
Itaipú on the Paraná between Brazil and Paraguay has a capacity of 14,000 MW. Baihetan on the Jinsha in China reached 16,000 MW in 2022.
