Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define a drainage basin.

    Model answer

A drainage basin is the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries. All precipitation falling within it feeds that one channel network.

  2. 2

    What is a watershed?

    Model answer

A watershed is the boundary between two adjacent drainage basins, usually following high ground. Precipitation falling either side of the watershed enters a different river system.

  3. 3

Name the single input to a drainage basin system.

    Model answer

Precipitation is the only input to a drainage basin system. Rain, snow, hail, sleet, dew and fog drip all count as precipitation.

  4. 4

Name the two outputs from a drainage basin.

    Model answer

Evapotranspiration and channel discharge to the sea are the two outputs. Both remove water across the boundary of the basin.

  5. 5

List the six main stores in a drainage basin.

    Model answer

The six stores are interception, vegetation, surface, soil moisture, channel and groundwater. Each holds water for a different average length of time.

  6. 6

    What is the interception store?

    Model answer

The interception store is water held temporarily on leaves, stems and branches after rainfall. Most of that water evaporates directly back to the atmosphere.
