Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define a cold-based glacier.

    Model answer

A cold-based glacier has ice at its base below the pressure melting point. The ice is frozen to the bedrock and no meltwater film exists there.

  2. 2

    Define a warm-based glacier.

    Model answer

A warm-based glacier has basal ice at the pressure melting point. A thin film of meltwater separates the ice from the rock beneath.

  3. 3

What is the pressure melting point?

    Model answer

The pressure melting point is the temperature at which ice melts under a given pressure. Ice under thick glaciers can melt at temperatures slightly below 0 °C.

  4. 4

    Where are cold-based glaciers found?

    Model answer

Cold-based glaciers occur in very high latitudes and at extreme altitude. The interior of Antarctica and the Dry Valleys there are typical settings.

  5. 5

    Where are warm-based glaciers found?

    Model answer

Warm-based glaciers occur in mid latitude mountain ranges and maritime climates. The Alps, Norway, Iceland and Alaska all carry them.

  6. 6

Compare the rates of movement of the two types.

    Model answer

A cold-based glacier moves only a few metres a year by internal deformation. A warm-based glacier can move 20 to 200 m a year because basal sliding is added.
