Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

Define a refugee under international law.

    Model answer

A refugee is a person outside their own country with a well-founded fear of persecution. The recognised grounds are race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership of a particular social group.

  2. 2

What is the 1951 Refugee Convention?

    Model answer

The 1951 Refugee Convention, agreed at Geneva, sets out who counts as a refugee and what rights they hold. The 1967 Protocol removed its original limits to Europe and to events before 1951.

  3. 3

    What does non-refoulement mean?

    Model answer

Non-refoulement is the rule that no state may return a person to a country where they face persecution. The principle appears in Article 33 of the 1951 Convention.

  4. 4

    What is an asylum seeker?

    Model answer

An asylum seeker is someone who has applied for refugee status and is waiting for a decision. Recognition makes that person a refugee, while refusal usually means removal.

  5. 5

    Define an internally displaced person.

    Model answer

An internally displaced person has been forced from home but remains inside their own country. International refugee conventions give internally displaced people no status and no protection.

  6. 6

How many people were forcibly displaced worldwide by 2024?

    Model answer

UNHCR reported more than 120 million people forcibly displaced by the middle of 2024. Internally displaced people made up the majority of that total.
