- 1
Why can a national average conceal serious poverty?
Model answer
A national average is pulled upward by one wealthy region or a small elite. Ghana's average masks poverty rates in the far north several times those of Accra.
- 2
Describe the regional pattern of poverty in Ghana.
Model answer
Poverty in Ghana rises steeply from the coast towards the northern savanna. The Upper West and Upper East regions recorded rates above 50% in the 2016 to 2017 living standards survey. Greater Accra recorded only a few per cent.
- 3
Give one physical reason for northern Ghana's lower level of development.
Model answer
Northern Ghana has a single short rainy season followed by the dry Harmattan. The southern forest zone has two rainfall peaks each year and supports cocoa.
- 4
Describe the regional pattern of poverty in Nigeria.
Model answer
Poverty in Nigeria is concentrated in the north-east and the north-west. A 2019 national survey put around 40% of Nigerians below the national poverty line. Sokoto State recorded a rate above 80% while Lagos recorded under 5%.
- 5
Explain how conflict has deepened regional inequality in Nigeria.
Model answer
The Boko Haram insurgency has displaced over two million people in the north-east since 2009. Schools, clinics and markets closed across Borno State, pushing the region further behind the south.
- 6
Describe the ethnic composition of Nigeria in broad terms.
Model answer
Nigeria contains more than 250 ethnic groups. The Hausa-Fulani of the north, the Yoruba of the south-west and the Igbo of the south-east are the largest.
