Glaciated Landscapes
Glacier ice movement and types of flow
- 3 things to know
- Component 1 Section A
Overview
Internal deformation, intergranular slip and laminar flow within a glacier.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is intergranular slip?
Explain laminar flow within a glacier.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define internal deformation.
Model answer
Internal deformation is the movement of ice by the slippage of ice crystals over one another. The process dominates in cold-based glaciers where no basal sliding occurs.
- 2
What is intergranular slip?
Model answer
Intergranular slip is the movement of whole ice crystals past their neighbours. The crystals reorient so that slip becomes easier in the direction of flow.
- 3
Explain laminar flow within a glacier.
Model answer
Laminar flow is the movement of layers of ice over one another at different speeds. Upper layers travel faster than those held back by friction at the bed.
- 4
Define basal sliding.
Model answer
Basal sliding is the movement of the whole glacier over its bed on a film of meltwater. The process requires warm-based conditions.
- 5
Explain regelation creep around a small obstacle.
Model answer
Pressure rises on the up-glacier side of a small obstacle, so ice there melts. The water flows around the obstacle and refreezes in the lower pressure on the far side.
- 6
Explain enhanced basal creep around a large obstacle.
Model answer
Stress increases where thick ice meets an obstacle too large for regelation. The ice deforms plastically and flows around the obstruction.
