Insolation, wind strength and reliability
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Capacity factor, location and scale of the Dogger Bank wind farm and wind reliability.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why does insolation fall with increasing latitude?
Which conditions give the highest insolation on Earth?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is meant by insolation?
Model answer
Insolation is the solar radiation received on a unit area of the Earth's surface. Values are usually given in kilowatt hours per square metre per year.
- 2
Why does insolation fall with increasing latitude?
Model answer
Sunlight strikes high latitudes at a low angle, so the same beam spreads over a wider area. The beam also passes through more atmosphere and loses more energy on the way.
- 3
Which conditions give the highest insolation on Earth?
Model answer
Subtropical deserts near 20° to 30° of latitude combine high sun angles with almost no cloud. High altitude and very dry air raise the total further.
- 4
Which deserts offer exceptional solar potential?
Model answer
The Atacama Desert in Chile records among the highest surface irradiance measured anywhere. The Sahara and the Mojave Desert offer comparable conditions.
- 5
Explain why cloud cover matters more than air temperature for solar output.
Model answer
Cloud scatters and absorbs incoming radiation before it reaches the panel. Photovoltaic efficiency actually falls slightly as the cell heats up.
- 6
What is a capacity factor?
Model answer
Capacity factor is actual output over a period divided by output at full rated power throughout. A United Kingdom solar farm runs at roughly 11%, against 25% or more in Chile.
