Sustainable management: quotas, no-catch zones and conservation zones
- 3 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Maximum sustainable yield, landing obligation and no-take zone.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
How does the Common Fisheries Policy work?
What is the landing obligation?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is maximum sustainable yield?
Model answer
Maximum sustainable yield is the largest catch that can be taken year after year without reducing the stock. Managers set quotas to keep fishing at or below that level.
- 2
How does the Common Fisheries Policy work?
Model answer
The European Union sets a total allowable catch for each stock each year. National quotas then divide that total between member states.
- 3
What is the landing obligation?
Model answer
The landing obligation requires vessels to bring ashore all regulated catch rather than discard it. The rule was phased in between 2015 and 2019.
- 4
Why were discards a problem?
Model answer
Fish thrown back to stay within quota are usually already dead. The practice wasted the catch and hid the true level of fishing mortality.
- 5
What is a no-take zone?
Model answer
A no-take zone bans all fishing within a defined area. Stocks inside can rebuild, and larger fish spill over into surrounding waters.
- 6
Give an example of a no-take zone in the United Kingdom.
Model answer
Lundy Island in the Bristol Channel became England's first no-take zone in 2003. Lobster numbers inside the zone rose several times over within a few years.
