Tectonic Hazards
Mitigation and the hazard management cycle
- 2 things to know
- Component 3 Section A
Overview
Four stages of the hazard management cycle, modifying the event and lava flow being diverted.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is meant by modifying the event?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name the four stages of the hazard management cycle.
Model answer
Mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery make up the hazard management cycle. The cycle is continuous, because recovery feeds into mitigation for the next event.
- 2
What is meant by modifying the event?
Model answer
Modifying the event means changing the hazard itself so that it does less harm. Diverting a lava flow or draining a crater lake are examples.
- 3
Give an example of a lava flow being diverted.
Model answer
Seawater was sprayed onto the advancing lava at Heimaey in Iceland in 1973 to chill and slow it. The harbour, on which the town's fishing economy depended, was saved.
- 4
How were barriers used on Mount Etna?
Model answer
Earth barriers and explosives were used on Mount Etna in 1983 and again in 1992 to divert lava away from villages. Diversion buys time but cannot stop a large flow.
- 5
What is meant by modifying vulnerability?
Model answer
Modifying vulnerability means reducing the harm a given event does to people. Education, drills, warning systems and land-use planning all do this.
- 6
Describe two aseismic building designs.
Model answer
Base isolation places a building on rubber and lead bearings that absorb horizontal movement. Cross-bracing and shear walls stiffen a frame so that it does not deform.
