Geological factors in energy supply
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Anticline trap, kenya's use of geothermal energy and hot dry rock geothermal technology.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Describe an anticline trap.
Why are sedimentary basins the focus of oil exploration?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What geological conditions are needed for an oil or gas field?
Model answer
An oil field needs an organic-rich source rock and a porous reservoir rock above it. An impermeable cap rock and a trapping structure must hold the hydrocarbons in place.
- 2
Describe an anticline trap.
Model answer
An anticline is an upfold in the rock strata. Oil and gas migrate upward and collect in the crest beneath the impermeable cap.
- 3
Why are sedimentary basins the focus of oil exploration?
Model answer
Sedimentary basins accumulate thick organic-rich muds that later generate hydrocarbons. Igneous and metamorphic rocks contain no such source material.
- 4
How does coal form, and what does that mean for its location?
Model answer
Coal forms where swamp vegetation accumulates and is then buried, compressed and heated. Coalfields therefore mark ancient deltas and swamps, such as the Carboniferous of northern Europe.
- 5
Distinguish anthracite from lignite.
Model answer
Anthracite has been buried deepest and has the highest carbon content and calorific value. Lignite is soft, wet and low in energy, so it is usually burnt close to the mine.
- 6
What determines whether a coal seam is worth mining?
Model answer
Seam thickness, depth and the amount of overburden decide the cost per tonne. Fault density and the sulphur content of the coal also affect viability.
Other ways to work this
