Coastal Landscapes
Storms, seasons and sea level change
- 2 things to know
- Component 1 Section A
Overview
Storm surge, eustatic sea level change and isostatic sea level change.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give a UK example of rapid coastal change during a storm.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How can a cliff profile change within seconds?
Model answer
A single storm wave can remove an undercut overhang that has been weakened for years. Several metres of cliff can be lost in one collapse.
- 2
Give a UK example of rapid coastal change during a storm.
Model answer
The winter storms of 2013 and 2014 destroyed the railway sea wall at Dawlish in Devon. Holderness lost several metres of cliff at Skipsea in the same season.
- 3
What is a storm surge?
Model answer
A storm surge is a temporary rise in sea level caused by low air pressure and strong onshore winds. A fall of 1 millibar in pressure raises the sea surface by roughly 1 cm.
- 4
Describe the effect of the December 2013 North Sea storm surge.
Model answer
The surge raised water about 1.5 to 2 m above the predicted tide, and some east coast gauges recorded higher water levels than in 1953. Around 1,400 homes flooded and cliff falls occurred all along the Norfolk coast.
- 5
How does a beach profile change in winter?
Model answer
Frequent destructive waves drag sediment offshore into a bar. The beach becomes narrower and flatter and the berm is destroyed.
- 6
How does a beach profile change through the summer?
Model answer
Constructive waves return sediment from the offshore bar to the beach face. The profile steepens and a berm is rebuilt near the high tide line.
