Feedback, thresholds and permafrost thaw
- 2 things to know
- Component 2
Overview
Positive feedback, negative feedback and threshold in a natural system.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Define negative feedback.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define positive feedback.
Model answer
Positive feedback amplifies an initial change and pushes a system further from its starting state. Each round of change makes the next round larger.
- 2
Define negative feedback.
Model answer
Negative feedback opposes an initial change and returns a system towards its earlier state. Stability in natural systems depends on it.
- 3
Define a threshold in a natural system.
Model answer
A threshold is a critical level beyond which a system shifts abruptly to a different state. Change past a threshold is often difficult or impossible to reverse.
- 4
What is meant by equilibrium in the carbon and water cycles?
Model answer
Equilibrium exists when inputs and outputs balance so that stores stay roughly constant. Dynamic equilibrium allows short-term fluctuation around a stable long-term average.
- 5
Describe the ice-albedo feedback.
Model answer
Sea ice melts to expose dark ocean water in place of a bright white surface. The ocean absorbs far more solar radiation, which warms the water and melts more ice.
- 6
Compare the albedo of sea ice and open ocean.
Model answer
Fresh sea ice and snow reflect around 80 to 90 per cent of the radiation striking them. Open ocean reflects under 10 per cent and absorbs the rest.
