Overview
How an esker forms, how a delta kame forms and how a kame terrace forms.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain how an esker forms.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define an esker.
Model answer
An esker is a long, sinuous ridge of sorted sand and gravel. The ridge can run for tens of kilometres and stands 5 m to 30 m high.
- 2
Explain how an esker forms.
Model answer
Meltwater flows under pressure through a tunnel at the base of the glacier and deposits its load on the tunnel floor. The ice walls are removed when the glacier melts, leaving the channel fill standing as a ridge.
- 3
Why can an esker run uphill?
Model answer
Water in a subglacial tunnel is under hydrostatic pressure from the ice above. Pressure can drive the flow up a gentle slope, so the ridge follows the ice surface gradient rather than the ground.
- 4
How can an esker be recognised from its sediment?
Model answer
Esker sediment is rounded, sorted and stratified, unlike the till around it. Cross-bedding within it shows the direction the meltwater flowed.
- 5
Give a named esker.
Model answer
The Trim esker in County Meath, Ireland, runs for about 14 km. Long eskers are also common across the Canadian Shield.
- 6
Define a kame.
Model answer
A kame is an isolated mound of stratified sand and gravel. The mound is typically 10 m to 50 m high with steep, irregular sides.
