China's climate and the monsoon
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Main climate types found in China, what drives the East Asian summer monsoon and winter monsoon in China.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain what drives the East Asian summer monsoon.
Describe the winter monsoon in China.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What are the main climate types found in China?
Model answer
China spans humid subtropical climates in the south, temperate continental climates in the north and arid climates in the north-west. High-altitude tundra covers the Tibetan Plateau.
- 2
Explain what drives the East Asian summer monsoon.
Model answer
Intense summer heating over the Asian landmass creates low pressure that draws moist air off the Pacific. Rain then sweeps north from the south coast between May and August.
- 3
Describe the winter monsoon in China.
Model answer
A powerful high pressure cell forms over Siberia and Mongolia each winter. Cold, dry northerly winds flow out across northern China, giving hard frosts and very little rain.
- 4
How does rainfall vary across China?
Model answer
Annual rainfall exceeds 1,600 mm on the south-east coast and falls below 50 mm in the Tarim Basin. The 400 mm isohyet runs roughly along the line of the Great Wall.
- 5
Why is northern China so much colder in winter than European places at the same latitude?
Model answer
The Siberian high sends continental polar air straight south over northern China. Europe by contrast is warmed by the Atlantic and the North Atlantic Drift.
- 6
Give an example of the temperature range in north-east China.
Model answer
Harbin in Heilongjiang averages about −18 °C in January and 23 °C in July. An annual range above 40 °C shows extreme continentality.
