Roches moutonnées, crag and tail and striations
- 2 things to know
- Component 1 Section A
Overview
Roche moutonnée and crag and tail.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which side of a roche moutonnée is the stoss side?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define a roche moutonnée.
Model answer
A roche moutonnée is a resistant rock outcrop smoothed on one side and jagged on the other. The feature is a few metres to tens of metres long.
- 2
Which side of a roche moutonnée is the stoss side?
Model answer
The stoss side faces up-glacier and is the smooth, gently sloping side. Abrasion has polished and striated that face.
- 3
Describe the lee side of a roche moutonnée.
Model answer
The lee side faces down-glacier and is steep, rough and stepped. Plucking has torn blocks away along the joints there.
- 4
Explain the formation of a roche moutonnée.
Model answer
Ice meeting the up-glacier face is compressed, so pressure melting produces water and debris abrades the rock smooth. Pressure falls on the far side, the meltwater refreezes onto the jointed rock and plucking rips blocks away.
- 5
Why does a roche moutonnée indicate the direction of ice flow?
Model answer
The smooth abraded face always points up-glacier and the plucked face down-glacier. Ice direction can therefore be read directly from the outcrop shape.
- 6
Give a UK example of roches moutonnées.
Model answer
Roches moutonnées are well displayed around Llyn Idwal and Cwm Idwal in Snowdonia. Similar forms occur on the Central Park schist in New York City.
