Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How large are China's greenhouse gas emissions?

    Model answer

China has been the largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world since 2006. Annual emissions exceeded 11 billion tonnes in the early 2020s, above the European Union average per person.

  2. 2

Why does coal cause such severe air pollution in China?

    Model answer

Coal combustion releases sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides and fine particulates. Power stations, steelworks and winter heating boilers concentrate those emissions over northern cities.

  3. 3

    What was the airpocalypse?

    Model answer

The airpocalypse describes the extreme smog over Beijing in January 2013, when PM2.5 passed 900 µg m⁻³. Public anger at the episode forced pollution onto the political agenda.

  4. 4

How many deaths are attributed to air pollution in China?

    Model answer

Studies through the 2010s attributed over a million premature deaths a year in China to air pollution. Life expectancy in the heavily polluted north was estimated to be several years shorter.

  5. 5

What is acid rain, and where does it affect China?

    Model answer

Acid rain forms when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxides dissolve in atmospheric moisture. Southern provinces such as Sichuan, Guizhou and Hunan suffered damage to forests and crops.

  6. 6

    How polluted are China's rivers?

    Model answer

Official monitoring in the 2010s found a large share of river sections unfit for human contact. The Huai and Hai rivers in the north were among the worst affected.
