Sustainable use and management of the Arctic tundra
- 2 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Three threats to the Arctic tundra, prudhoe Bay oil field and gas development on the Yamal Peninsula.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Why is the Arctic attractive to the energy industry?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Name three threats to the Arctic tundra.
Model answer
Climate change, mineral and energy exploitation, and tourism are the three main threats. Each of them is intensifying as the ice retreats.
- 2
Why is the Arctic attractive to the energy industry?
Model answer
Large reserves of oil and gas lie beneath the Arctic land and continental shelf. Retreating ice is making extraction and shipping more practical.
- 3
Describe the Prudhoe Bay oil field.
Model answer
Prudhoe Bay on Alaska's North Slope is the largest oil field in North America and began producing in 1977. The field sits on continuous permafrost and has an extensive network of roads and drilling pads.
- 4
How does the Trans-Alaska Pipeline protect the permafrost?
Model answer
Around half of the 1,287 km pipeline is raised on supports rather than buried. Heat pipes in those supports carry warmth away so that the frozen ground is not thawed.
- 5
Why is the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge contested?
Model answer
The refuge protects the calving grounds of the Porcupine caribou herd, and its coastal plain is thought to hold oil. Successive United States governments have reversed each other's decisions on drilling there.
- 6
How does mineral extraction damage the tundra?
Model answer
Vehicles, drilling pads and waste disrupt the thin active layer, and vegetation recovers extremely slowly. Track marks made decades ago can still be seen on the ground.
