Droughts, floods and climate variability
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Living with a monsoon that fails or overshoots — the events, the populations exposed, and the irrigation, storage and warning that reduce the damage.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Which parts of India are most drought-prone?
Describe the impacts of the 2015 to 2016 drought in India.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What counts as a deficient monsoon in India?
Model answer
Seasonal rainfall below 90% of the long-period average is classed as deficient. A wide-area shortfall on that scale is then treated as a drought year.
- 2
Which parts of India are most drought-prone?
Model answer
Interior Maharashtra, especially Marathwada, along with Rajasthan, Telangana and interior Karnataka are the most drought-prone. All lie in rain shadow or in the arid west.
- 3
Describe the impacts of the 2015 to 2016 drought in India.
Model answer
Two consecutive deficient monsoons left about 330 million people affected across ten states by 2016. Water trains were sent to Latur in Marathwada, and rural distress migration rose sharply.
- 4
Why does sugar cane worsen drought impacts in Maharashtra?
Model answer
Sugar cane is extremely water-hungry yet occupies much of the irrigated land in Maharashtra. Water allocated to cane leaves less for drinking supply and for food crops in dry years.
- 5
What causes the Kosi river to flood so severely?
Model answer
The Kosi carries huge sediment loads out of Nepal and deposits them on the Bihar plain, raising its own bed. Embankments then fail and the river shifts course across the floodplain.
- 6
Describe the 2008 Kosi flood.
Model answer
An embankment breach in Nepal in August 2008 sent the Kosi about 120 km east of its channel. Around 3 million people in Bihar were displaced.
