Key term

What is an isoline map, and what are the named isolines a geographer uses?

Key term

What is a choropleth map?

Evaluation

State one advantage and one disadvantage of a choropleth map.

Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is a choropleth map?

    Model answer

A choropleth map shades areas according to the value of a variable. Darker shading conventionally represents higher values.

  2. 2

State one advantage and one disadvantage of a choropleth map.

    Model answer

A choropleth shows regional patterns clearly and is quick to read. The technique implies uniformity within each unit and abrupt change at every boundary.

  3. 3

Why should a choropleth map show density rather than a total?

    Model answer

A large area will always have a high total simply because of its size. A map shaded by total therefore shows area rather than the variable of interest.

  4. 4

    What is an isoline map?

    Model answer

An isoline map joins points of equal value with a line. Contours joining points of equal height are the familiar example.

  5. 5

Give two examples of isolines other than contours.

    Model answer

Isotherms join points of equal temperature and isobars join points of equal pressure. Isohyets join points of equal rainfall.

  6. 6

    What is an isopleth map?

    Model answer

An isopleth map draws lines of equal value for a quantity that is derived rather than directly measured, such as population density. The lines are interpolated between data points.
