India's climate and the monsoon
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
What drives the south-west monsoon, two branches of the south-west monsoon and retreating monsoon.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain what drives the south-west monsoon.
When does the south-west monsoon reach Kerala, and when does it cover the country?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What type of climate does most of India have?
Model answer
Most of India has a tropical monsoon climate with a marked wet and dry season. Temperatures stay high all year except in the mountains and the far north.
- 2
Explain what drives the south-west monsoon.
Model answer
Intense summer heating of northern India and the Tibetan Plateau creates a low pressure cell. Moist air is then drawn in from the Indian Ocean across the equator, bringing heavy rain.
- 3
When does the south-west monsoon reach Kerala, and when does it cover the country?
Model answer
The monsoon normally breaks over Kerala around 1 June. Full cover of the country normally follows by about 8 July.
- 4
Name the two branches of the south-west monsoon.
Model answer
The Arabian Sea branch strikes the Western Ghats and the west coast. The Bay of Bengal branch turns up the Ganges valley against the Himalaya.
- 5
Describe the retreating monsoon.
Model answer
The retreating monsoon runs from October to December as the low pressure cell weakens. Winds reverse offshore and bring rain to Tamil Nadu on the south-east coast.
- 6
Why is Tamil Nadu wettest in autumn rather than summer?
Model answer
Tamil Nadu sits in the rain shadow of the Western Ghats during the summer monsoon. The main rain arrives with the north-east monsoon crossing the Bay of Bengal in October and November.
