Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Define supraglacial transport.

    Model answer

Supraglacial transport is the carriage of debris on the surface of a glacier. Rockfall and avalanche from the valley sides supply most of that material.

  2. 2

    Define englacial transport.

    Model answer

Englacial transport is the carriage of debris within the body of the ice. Surface material falls into crevasses or is buried by later snowfall.

  3. 3

    Define subglacial transport.

    Model answer

Subglacial transport is the movement of debris at the base of the glacier. Material plucked from the bedrock and debris that has worked its way down make up the load.

  4. 4

How does debris move from the surface to the base of a glacier?

    Model answer

Debris falls into crevasses and moulins and works downward through the ice. Compressional flow can then carry it back up along shear planes near the snout.

  5. 5

Describe the characteristics of sediment deposited directly by ice.

    Model answer

Glacial sediment is angular, unsorted and unstratified. Particles of every size from clay to boulders sit mixed together.

  6. 6

    Why is glacial sediment angular?

    Model answer

Fragments are frozen into the ice and carried rather than rolled along a bed. Particles rarely collide, so their edges are never rounded off.
