Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

How large are India's carbon dioxide emissions in total and per person?

    Model answer

India was the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide by the early 2020s, at around 2.8 billion tonnes a year. Emissions per person stayed under 2 tonnes, far below the world average.

  2. 2

Why does coal dominate Indian electricity?

    Model answer

Domestic coal is abundant and cheap, and existing power plants and railways are built around it. Coal generated roughly 70% of India's electricity in the early 2020s.

  3. 3

How bad is air pollution in Indian cities?

    Model answer

Many of the most polluted cities in the world lie on the Indo-Gangetic plain, including Delhi, Kanpur and Lucknow. Annual PM2.5 in Delhi often exceeds ten times the World Health Organization guideline.

  4. 4

    What causes Delhi's autumn smog?

    Model answer

Stubble burning in Punjab and Haryana after the rice harvest adds smoke each October and November. Cool, still air then traps that smoke with vehicle and industrial emissions over the city.

  5. 5

What happened at Bhopal in 1984?

    Model answer

A leak of methyl isocyanate from a pesticide plant in Bhopal in December 1984 killed thousands within days. Contamination of the site and local groundwater has never been fully cleared.

  6. 6

    How polluted is the Ganges?

    Model answer

Untreated sewage from the cities along the river is the largest single source of pollution in the Ganges. Tanneries at Kanpur add chromium and other industrial effluent.
