Overview
Carbon capture and storage, carbon sequestration and coal gasification.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Where is carbon dioxide stored underground?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is carbon capture and storage?
Model answer
Carbon capture and storage removes carbon dioxide from flue gas or from industrial process streams. The gas is then compressed, piped and injected into deep geological formations.
- 2
Where is carbon dioxide stored underground?
Model answer
Depleted oil and gas fields and deep saline aquifers provide the main storage formations. A depth of around 800 m keeps the carbon dioxide dense and compact.
- 3
Name two operating carbon capture and storage projects.
Model answer
Norway's Sleipner project has injected carbon dioxide beneath the North Sea since 1996. Boundary Dam in Saskatchewan became the first commercial capture plant on a coal station in 2014.
- 4
What is carbon sequestration?
Model answer
Carbon sequestration is the long-term storage of carbon away from the atmosphere. Geological injection, ocean uptake and forest growth are the main routes.
- 5
Why has carbon capture spread so slowly?
Model answer
Capture equipment is expensive and consumes a large share of the plant's own output. Global capture capacity remains a tiny fraction of annual emissions.
- 6
What is coal gasification?
Model answer
Gasification converts coal into a synthesis gas of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. The gas is cleaned before combustion to remove sulphur and particulates.
