Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is UNHCR, and when was it created?
Model answer
UNHCR is the United Nations refugee agency, created in December 1950 and operating from 1951. The agency protects refugees and works towards lasting solutions for them.
- 2
Name the three durable solutions UNHCR works towards.
Model answer
The three durable solutions are voluntary repatriation, local integration and resettlement in a third country. Voluntary return is the outcome UNHCR prefers where conditions are safe.
- 3
What practical work does UNHCR do in an emergency?
Model answer
UNHCR supplies shelter, water, registration and legal protection in the first weeks of a crisis. Registration gives each person documents and a place in the aid system.
- 4
How is UNHCR funded, and why is that a weakness?
Model answer
UNHCR depends almost entirely on voluntary contributions from governments. Appeals are routinely funded at around half of what the agency requests.
- 5
What is the Global Compact on Refugees?
Model answer
The Global Compact on Refugees, agreed in 2018, asks states to share the responsibility of hosting more fairly. The compact is not legally binding on anyone.
- 6
What can a national government do to manage a refugee inflow?
Model answer
Governments can grant temporary protection, open work rights, fund host regions and process claims faster. Border closures and offshore processing are the restrictive alternatives.
