Overview
Hydraulic action, role of air compression in wave quarrying and abrasion in a coastal setting.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Explain the role of air compression in wave quarrying.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define hydraulic action.
Model answer
Hydraulic action is the force of moving water on a rock face. A breaking wave throws tonnes of water against the cliff and forces it into every crack.
- 2
Explain the role of air compression in wave quarrying.
Model answer
A breaking wave traps air in a joint and compresses it violently. The air expands explosively as the wave retreats, shattering the rock around the joint.
- 3
Define abrasion in a coastal setting.
Model answer
Abrasion, also called corrasion, is the wearing away of rock by sediment thrown against it. Waves armed with sand and shingle act like sandpaper on the cliff foot.
- 4
Why is abrasion most effective during a storm?
Model answer
Storm waves carry larger and more numerous particles and strike with greater force. The rate of wear on the cliff foot therefore rises sharply.
- 5
Define corrosion as a marine process.
Model answer
Corrosion, or solution, is the chemical dissolving of rock minerals by sea water. Limestone and chalk are most vulnerable because calcium carbonate dissolves in weak acid.
- 6
Define attrition.
Model answer
Attrition is the wearing down of sediment particles as they collide with each other. Angular fragments become smaller, smoother and rounder over time.
