Percentages, ratios, densities and frequencies
- 3 things to know
- All three components
Overview
Percentage change and how is it calculated, ratio and give an example from geography and population density and state its usual units.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is percentage change and how is it calculated?
A population falls from 8000 to 6000. Calculate the percentage change.
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
How is a percentage calculated from a total?
Model answer
The part is divided by the whole and multiplied by 100. A figure of 45 out of 300 is 15%.
- 2
What is percentage change and how is it calculated?
Model answer
Percentage change is the difference divided by the original value, multiplied by 100. A rise from 200 to 250 is a 25% increase.
- 3
A population falls from 8000 to 6000. Calculate the percentage change.
Model answer
The fall is 2000 from an original 8000, which is 0.25. The population fell by 25%.
- 4
Why can a percentage change be misleading when the base is small?
Model answer
A small base turns a tiny absolute change into a large percentage. A rise from 2 cases to 4 is a 100% increase but only two extra cases.
- 5
Define a ratio and give an example from geography.
Model answer
A ratio compares two quantities by division, written as a to b. A teacher to pupil ratio of 1:30 is a standard example.
- 6
Define population density and state its usual units.
Model answer
Population density is the number of people per unit area. The usual unit is people per square kilometre.
