Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    What is MARPOL?

    Model answer

MARPOL is the IMO convention preventing pollution from ships, agreed in 1973 and amended in 1978. Separate annexes cover oil, chemicals, sewage, garbage and air emissions.

  2. 2

What does MARPOL Annex V do?

    Model answer

Annex V governs garbage from ships and bans the disposal of plastics at sea. The prohibition took effect in 1988.

  3. 3

    What is the London Convention?

    Model answer

The London Convention of 1972 controls the dumping of waste at sea. A protocol agreed in 1996 reversed the approach, banning dumping except for a short permitted list.

  4. 4

What did the Basel Convention change in 2019?

    Model answer

Parties added most plastic waste to the convention's controlled categories in 2019. Exporters now need the consent of the receiving country.

  5. 5

What progress has been made towards a global plastics treaty?

    Model answer

United Nations members agreed in 2022 to negotiate a treaty on plastic pollution. Talks had not produced an agreed text by 2025.

  6. 6

What does the EU Single-Use Plastics Directive do?

    Model answer

The directive banned ten single-use items, including straws, cutlery and cotton buds, from July 2021. Producers must also fund clean-up of the litter their products cause.
