Questions from this subtopic

Each one with the model answer underneath.

  1. 1

    Distinguish prediction from forecasting.

    Model answer

Prediction states where, when and how large an event will be. Forecasting gives only a probability over a period, which is all that is currently possible for earthquakes.

  2. 2

Name four methods of monitoring a volcano.

    Model answer

Seismometers record small earthquakes beneath the volcano, and tiltmeters measure swelling of the flanks. Gas spectrometers track sulphur dioxide output, and satellite radar measures ground deformation.

  3. 3

Why do earthquake swarms precede a volcanic eruption?

    Model answer

Magma forcing its way upwards fractures the surrounding rock. The number and depth of those small earthquakes show how far the magma has risen.

  4. 4

What does ground deformation tell volcanologists?

    Model answer

Swelling of a volcano shows that magma is accumulating in the chamber beneath it. Tiltmeters, GPS receivers and satellite radar can detect changes of a few millimetres.

  5. 5

Why is sulphur dioxide output monitored at a volcano?

    Model answer

A rise in sulphur dioxide output shows that fresh magma is approaching the surface. A sudden fall may instead mean the vent is blocked and pressure is building.

  6. 6

How is thermal monitoring used at a volcano?

    Model answer

Infrared satellite images and thermal cameras detect heating of the ground and of any crater lake. A rising temperature suggests that magma is nearer the surface.
