Ecosystems
The ecosystem concept, energy flow and trophic levels
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Ultimate source of energy in almost all ecosystems, gross primary productivity and net primary productivity.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem.
What is the ultimate source of energy in almost all ecosystems?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define an ecosystem.
Model answer
An ecosystem is a community of organisms together with the physical environment they interact with. Energy flows through the system while nutrients cycle within it.
- 2
Distinguish the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem.
Model answer
Biotic components are the living parts, such as plants, animals and decomposers. Abiotic components are the non-living parts, such as climate, soil, water and light.
- 3
What is the ultimate source of energy in almost all ecosystems?
Model answer
Solar radiation is the ultimate source of energy in almost all ecosystems. Green plants capture it by photosynthesis and pass it on as chemical energy.
- 4
What proportion of incoming solar energy is fixed by plants?
Model answer
Green plants fix only about 1% to 2% of the solar energy reaching them. Reflection, transmission and unusable wavelengths account for most of the loss.
- 5
Define gross primary productivity.
Model answer
Gross primary productivity is the total amount of energy fixed by producers through photosynthesis. The figure is measured before any of it is used in respiration.
- 6
Define net primary productivity.
Model answer
Net primary productivity is gross primary productivity minus the energy plants use in respiration. The remainder is what becomes available to the rest of the food chain.
