Till and types of moraine
- 2 things to know
- Component 1 Section A
Overview
Lodgement till, ablation till and deformation till.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
What is lodgement till?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Define till.
Model answer
Till is unsorted, angular sediment deposited directly by glacier ice. Boulders, sand and clay are mixed together with no layering.
- 2
What is lodgement till?
Model answer
Lodgement till is material plastered onto the bed beneath a still-moving glacier. Friction with the bed halts the debris while the ice above continues forward.
- 3
Describe ablation till.
Model answer
Ablation till is material released as the ice melts away around it. The deposit is dropped where it lies, so it is looser and often coarser than lodgement till.
- 4
What is deformation till?
Model answer
Deformation till is sediment that has been sheared and remoulded beneath moving ice. Original layering is folded and broken up by the shearing.
- 5
How can lodgement till be recognised in the field?
Model answer
Lodgement till is dense and compacted, with elongated stones aligned in the direction of ice flow. Ablation till has no such preferred orientation.
- 6
Define a moraine.
Model answer
A moraine is a landform built of debris deposited by a glacier. Moraines are named by their position relative to the glacier.
