- All three components
Overview
Geographic information system, buffer in GIS and GPS and how does it fix a position.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Give two analytical tasks a GIS performs that a paper map cannot.
What is a buffer in GIS?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
What is a geographic information system?
Model answer
A geographic information system is software that stores, analyses and displays data linked to locations. Information is held in layers that can be combined.
- 2
Give two analytical tasks a GIS performs that a paper map cannot.
Model answer
A GIS can overlay several data layers and query where conditions coincide. Buffering and automatic distance and area calculation are equally beyond paper.
- 3
What is a buffer in GIS?
Model answer
A buffer is a zone drawn at a set distance around a feature. Everything within 500 metres of a river can be selected that way.
- 4
What is GPS and how does it fix a position?
Model answer
GPS is a global positioning system using satellites. A receiver measures the time signals take from at least four satellites and trilaterates its position.
- 5
State two uses of GPS in geographical fieldwork.
Model answer
GPS records the exact location of each sampling point for later mapping. A tracked route also yields distance, speed and altitude.
- 6
How are satellite images useful to geographers?
Model answer
Satellite images give repeated coverage of areas that are remote or dangerous to visit. Change over time can be measured by comparing images of the same place.

What is inside Levo
Six ways to work the same material.
Every question in Geographical Skills, on a schedule.
Attempt a question from memory, write the correct version, then attempt it again. Levo records the jump between your first attempt and your last, and brings each question back on the day you are due to forget it.
