Classifying energy resources
- 3 things to know
- Component 3 Section B
Overview
Recyclable energy resource, difference between a stock resource and a flow resource and commercial energy and contrast it with non-commercial energy.
What you need to know
Answer each one before you reveal it.
Distinguish renewable from non-renewable energy resources.
What is a recyclable energy resource?
Questions from this subtopic
Each one with the model answer underneath.
- 1
Distinguish renewable from non-renewable energy resources.
Model answer
A renewable resource is replenished on a human timescale and is not used up by consumption. A non-renewable resource exists as a fixed stock that is depleted as it is used.
- 2
What is a recyclable energy resource?
Model answer
A recyclable resource can be reprocessed and used again, as spent nuclear fuel can. Reprocessed uranium and plutonium return to the fuel cycle rather than going to waste.
- 3
Distinguish a primary from a secondary energy source.
Model answer
A primary source is used in the form found in nature, such as coal, oil or wind. A secondary source is converted from a primary one, and electricity is the main example.
- 4
Explain the difference between a stock resource and a flow resource.
Model answer
A stock resource sits in the ground as a finite quantity, as oil and coal do. A flow resource arrives continuously, as sunlight, wind and river discharge do.
- 5
Define commercial energy and contrast it with non-commercial energy.
Model answer
Commercial energy is bought and sold in a market, such as electricity, petrol or piped gas. Traditional fuels gathered without payment, such as firewood and dung, are non-commercial.
- 6
What is meant by an energy mix?
Model answer
An energy mix is the combination of sources a country uses to meet its total demand. The mix is usually stated as a percentage share for each fuel.
